For three months of the year, Salalah is the most hostile place in the Gulf to put a light fitting. Not because of heat — the rest of Oman is far hotter — but because of what replaces it.

The khareef, the southwest monsoon that settles over Dhofar from roughly 21 June to 20 September, drops Salalah to around 22–27°C while Muscat and Dubai sit above 40°C. It also wraps the region in near-continuous mist, drizzle and cloud for the better part of a hundred days.

Fixtures specified for Dubai conditions routinely fail there. Here is why, and what to specify instead.

Why khareef is harder on a fixture than heat

Gulf specification habits are built around one enemy: temperature. Choose a driver rated for 50°C ambient, get the thermal management right, and a fixture will survive a Dubai summer.

Khareef attacks differently. The problems are:

Persistent moisture rather than occasional rain. An IP-rated seal is tested against defined bursts of water. It is not tested against three months of saturated air. Moisture does not need to be driven into a housing under pressure — it simply arrives, continuously, and finds any path available.

Thermal cycling that pumps air. A fixture that runs warm at night and cools in the morning mist breathes. Air is drawn in as the housing cools and expelled as it warms. Over a season, that cycle moves a surprising volume of damp air through any gland or seal that is less than perfect, and condensation forms inside the optic where no drainage was designed.

Salt carried in suspension. Salalah is coastal, and khareef mist is not clean water. It carries salt inland and deposits it on every surface, including the ones inside a housing that has been breathing.

Biological growth. The reason the Dhofar mountains turn green is the reason lenses turn green. Constant damp and moderate temperatures are ideal for algae and mould on optics, gaskets and drainage paths.

What to specify

IP rating: IP66 as the floor, IP68 where water collects

IP65 is adequate for Muscat and marginal for Salalah. Specify IP66 minimum for anything exposed — wall washers, bollards, spike spots, step lights. Use IP68 for in-ground fixtures, pool and water-feature lighting, and anywhere a fitting may sit in standing water rather than merely be rained on.

Be aware that IP68 is not a single standard. It is defined by the depth and duration the manufacturer declares. Ask for the figures, not the label.

Housing material matters more than the IP number

A poorly chosen material will fail long before the seal does.

Marine-grade 316 stainless for exposed fixings, in-ground housings and anything within a few hundred metres of the sea. 304 stainless will show rust staining within a season in these conditions.

Low-copper marine-grade aluminium (typically the 6000 series) with a high-quality anodised and powder-coated finish. Copper content is what drives pitting corrosion in salt air; standard die-cast alloys with higher copper will bloom under the coating and lift it.

Avoid mixed metals in contact. A stainless fixing through an aluminium housing without an isolating washer will corrode galvanically. In khareef conditions that process runs continuously rather than seasonally.

Gaskets and glands

Specify silicone gaskets rather than EPDM or nitrile where you can. Silicone holds its elasticity through thermal cycling; cheaper compounds take a compression set, and once a gasket stops springing back the IP rating is a number on a datasheet rather than a property of the installed fixture.

Cable glands should be rated to the same IP as the housing and correctly sized to the cable. An oversized gland on an undersized cable is the single most common point of water ingress we see.

Breathing membranes

The best exterior fixtures for this climate include a Gore-type vent membrane — a patch that allows air and water vapour to pass while blocking liquid water. It equalises pressure so the housing stops pumping damp air through its seals, and lets accumulated vapour escape rather than condensing on the inside of the lens.

If a fixture is going into Dhofar and has no vent, ask the manufacturer why.

Optics and finish

Tempered glass rather than polycarbonate for exposed lenses. Polycarbonate yellows under UV and its surface roughens, which gives algae something to hold onto. Glass cleans.

Specify a finish that can be washed. Textured dark finishes hide dust in Muscat but show biological growth in Salalah.

Drivers and electronics

Remote drivers in an accessible, ventilated enclosure will always outlast integral drivers in this climate. Where an integral driver is unavoidable, potting or conformal coating on the driver board is worth insisting on.

Surge protection matters more than people expect. Khareef brings electrical storms, and rural Dhofar distribution is not always clean. Specify at least 4kV surge protection on exterior circuits, 10kV on exposed pole-mounted equipment.

Design decisions, not just product decisions

Some of the best protection is in the layout rather than the fixture schedule.

Mount above the splash zone where you can. A wall washer at 300mm has a much harder life than the same fixture at 1200mm.

Give in-ground fixtures real drainage. A gravel bed and a drainage path, not just a sleeve in the ground. During khareef, a sleeve without drainage becomes a well.

Avoid upward-facing horizontal glass where a design allows an alternative. Anything facing straight up collects standing water, silt and growth. An angled or shielded aperture stays clean for years longer.

Plan for cleaning. Anything that will need washing three times a year should be reachable without scaffolding. This is a conversation worth having with the client before handover, not after.

A note on warranty

Read the exclusions. Many manufacturers’ warranties are void for corrosion, or for installation within a defined distance of the coast. A five-year warranty that excludes salt damage is not a five-year warranty in Salalah.

The short version

For a Dhofar project: IP66 minimum and IP68 where water sits, 316 stainless and low-copper marine aluminium, silicone gaskets, vented housings, glass optics, remote drivers where possible, and surge protection on every exterior circuit. Then design the layout so the fixtures can drain and be cleaned.

Specify for the mist, not the heat. The heat is the easy part.
